"A beautiful, relaxed and friendly city. The old part with its hills, narrow streets, colourful wooden trams and buildings covered with decorative tiles is so full of character. Little alleys lead on to quiet, almost sleepy squares with a big tree or two providing shade for some elderly man sitting on a beautiful old-fashioned wooden bench watching the occasional passer-by and offering to help if he or she looks lost. Then a door opens and a bunch of healthily tanned children with dusty feet in sandals emerge to resume their play in the street. The new parts of town are well organised, clean, modern and elegant. Lisbon creates the impression of a culture and arts conscious city intent on preserving a nostalgic charm."
