Penang was a food heaven, try the hawkers at Gurney Drive. Don't expect much nightlife such as bars/clubs. The bus is extremely cheap and plenty of them, Taxis also cheap but fares varied, be prepared to negotiate.

Some good local restaurants (The Boatman and Ferringhi Gardens) but don't miss the hawker stalls at Gurney Drive.
Local buses are OK - very cheap but in poor condition and not frequent. Taxis are cheap compared to the UK.
A trip to Penang Hill is recommended if you want a good view of the island.

Batu Ferenghi is a bit of a dump, Georgetown even more so. A trip to Langkawi is a must, but as for Penang, there isn't an awful lot to keep you entertained. If you want to laze by a pool, this is a great destination. If you are looking for a sight-seeing destination, I suggest you look elsewhere.
Watch out for jelly fish!!!

GeorgeTown is worth a walk around for a little bargain hunting and seeing the pre wwII buildings. Lankawi is a much better island for beaches and site seeing and can be reached by a two hour ferry ride from George Town. Camereon Highlands and Kuala Lumpur can be reached by bus from the GeorgeTown Bus Terminal...ask at the hotel.

Georgetown is now cleaner as before 10 years and the streets are good. If you come to THAIPUSAM Festival you enjoy the celebration with the Hindu-Pepole. A Day Trip to Batu Ferringi and Fruit Farm are intresting. The best exercices to do is a walk to the Penang Hill from Botanical Garden. 8 km strong walk to the peak.

The hotel is located right in Georgetown with a lot of "old" shops around. Near it is a "24-hour" store. But stay away from "gifts" store on the same block - they are real sharks!!!! Instead go across the street and one would find Indian curry food at great prices; and another gift store (non-aircond) with great prices. Taxis are available at all times from the front of the hotel, but ask the price first before getting in, if in doubt, ask the friendly hotel staff!

I went around the beach area, butterfly park, bird park etc. Bird park requires maintenance, its dirty and inmates are very old! Butterfly park and adjoining exhbition-cum-sales is okay. Penang is beautiful.
